What is "Direct Disposition"?

Direct Disposition is the most basic of services that a Funeral Director provides. The Funeral Director will still need to meet with the family to complete paper work and authorizations, register the death with vital statistics, secure death certificates and a cremation permit, help the family select a casket/container for burial/cremation and discuss memorialization options which may include purchasing an urn or cemetery property.

The Funeral Director will arrange transfer of the deceased from the place of death to the funeral home and then to the cemetery or crematorium. Burial can occur any time but most cemeteries require 24 to 48 hours' notice.

The family may also wish to arrange for a private viewing time for family members who have not had a chance to say good-bye. This can be done at the funeral home prior to cremation or burial. If requested, the Funeral Director will also help with drafting and inserting an obituary notice for newspapers and preparing memorial cards. These are additional items and, if selected, will add to the cost of a direct disposition.
